Hello, and welcome to my blog! I’m Abbie, a GP partner and trainer in York, wife to my Yorkshireman and Mum to two kids.

My first foray in to social media as a GP was when I curated the @NHS twitter account in July 2017. I was surprised how much I enjoyed that week and how much interest there was in general practice so I decided to further mix my interest in social media with medicine and start my own blog.

I started this blog in early 2018 and it was a place for me to share the joys and hardships of trying to juggle life as a mum, a wife and a GP while trying to maintain some ‘me’ time. My dad died in 2017 and it allowed me to process things. I find writing therapeutic in some ways.

It has been a challenging few years with Covid-19, backlogs and record number of patients seeking healthcare from their GP practice. It has been hard to write things down without venting my frustrations, hence why there has been some gaps in my post publishing!

I want to share an honest reflection of how it feels to be a GP working in 2025 – what we are doing to strive for better patient care and improve working conditions for everyone working in general practice.

I go through spells of feeling frustrated with the system and my job, and then phases of being so passionate. I am finding it hard to balance the two and bring you useful blog posts. I don’t just want to moan and whinge, I want to highlight the challenges and help everyone navigate this clunky NHS system a little easier.

Understanding why General Practice can’t always deliver what you want or expect is important. I hope this blog helps to demystify some of the confusion around what GPs do and we we cannot do it all.
